Saturday was an extremely important day in our calendar - International Women's Day. It is an annual event that has been held for over 100 years.
Invited by Phil John and Jen or should that read, invited by Jen and Phil John? I joined in the celebration by speaking to a group at St Cynfelyn's Church Hall, Caerau.
Unless very unfortunate, we have all been influenced by the love of wonderful women in our lives.
I spoke to the assembled crowd about the women who have undertaken the role of High Sheriff across the country. There are many of them who have proceeded to do an excellent job, before highlighting the women who have been inspirational in my medical career and personal life. These include my great-grandmother, nan, mam and pioneering valley GP Dr Jill Evans. All indomitable, all inspirational.
Strides in equality have been made over the years, but at a glacially slow pace in many areas. Continuing inequalities in the workplace, domestic violence, misogyny and violence against women shames our society. Unacceptable in the extreme at any level.
International Women’s Day remains a day to be positive and celebrate women, who should realise the vast majority of them are idolised by those of all genders who have been fortunate enough to share their lives.
Achievements and progress are being made, but let’s acknowledge there is still much to do.
