Tretower is a wonderful village near Crickhowell, set in the verdant Mid-Wales countryside.

Magistrate and former Powys councillor Lady Kathryn Silk become Powys’ new High Sheriff in a traditional ceremony at Tretower Church.

A chapel has been on the site since 1234. I have been reliably informed it is highly likely religion has been practiced at the same location long before that.

The late 18th Century saw some prosperity thanks to Queen Anne, who had bought land and farms in the area. However, by the turn of the 19th Century there was only one Sunday service – in Welsh – and Eucharist four times a year.

The church was altered and partially rebuilt in 1876. A year later the church was re-consecrated and the Parish of Tretower assigned to the place of worship.

The stained-glass windows are particularly interesting, being memorials to the Bailey family of Glanusk Park.

A pleasant ceremony was enjoyed by all attendees and I wish the High Sheriff of Powys, Lady Kathryn Silk JP, every success in her year of Shrievalty.
