One thing about the Welsh valleys, they are hardly conducive to cycling. Unlike the Benelux nations where the lack of inclines makes them ideal for pushbikes, particularly the Netherlands, journeys on two self-propelled wheels have in the main been considered a little too arduous. Unless, of course, you are a Geraint Thomas or going back further, the famed Linton brothers and Jimmy Michael all of Aberaman.
Then came Mountain-biking and BMX. The rugged landscape that surrounds us is ideal for these two variations of cycling.
I had an excellent afternoon at the Caerau BMX Track, home to the Llynfi BMX Racing Club. It was a first for me to see a BMX Competition - and I'm extremely grateful to Matthew Rowlands and Llynfi BMX Racing Club for the invite to present the winners of the Welsh Championship with shirts and medals. It was a team effort with Mayor of Maesteg Chris Davies also handing out the awards.
To get in the spirit of the day - I cycled to the venue of course. Luckily, the return journey home was downhill!
The BMX course in Caerau is an absolutely fabulous facility. From the way the arena was bedecked and transformed, more events should be held there. This was an excellent day at the track, which hosted the South-West Championships and Welsh Championships. There was great music, raffles, trade stalls, clubs, food stalls that all combined to make a great fun day of BMX Competition. It was so professionally organised. It is a must for our local track to play host to more events like this.
The day was full of energy. Youngsters and adults of all ages competed at high speed, all racing with determination to be the front runners. With BMX now an Olympic sport, this track requires more attractions and regular use; and to achieve this Llynfi BMX in requires much needed local sponsorship - if you are reading this and are in a position to help - please get in touch!
Llongyfarchiadau to all involved!
