Today, it was extremely pleasing to be at the launch of the Llynfi Valley Cancer Support Group. The group is the brainchild of Mr Tom Beedle, who has championed the concept, following cancer affecting family members. Tom has attracted support and funding from The Coalfields Regeneration Trust [Wales] in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Having been asked to speak, it was imperative to explain the research which reveals one in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. In some areas these odds are shortened yet further This equates to around 20,000 cancer diagnoses in Wales each year. From lifestyle choices, to diets, to environments, the causes are increasing.

While the causes are increasing, the consequences remain the same. It is life altering and impacts: family, loved ones, friends, colleagues and above all, the person diagnosed.

There are many sources of help and support, especially online. Nevertheless, it’s at testing times like this, while grappling with complex and unfamiliar situations, plus navigating health and care systems, while undergoing tiring treatment and bemusing emotions it’s local groups and peer support that are certainly a more familiar point of contact when people often feel overwhelmed. The Llynfi Valley Cancer Support Group aims to fill this void.

Once again the evening was supported by Maesteg Gleemen Male Voice Choir who sang several pieces wonderfully well. Personally, I cannot thank the choir enough for their voluntary support to many community activities. Diolch yn Fawr iawn to Musical Director Alun Hodges, Accompanist Suzanne Hodges and Deputy Musical Director Anthony Bwye.
