Today, is Merthyr Tydfil Day! As well as attending the Civic Service for Mayor Cllr John Thomas - I had an absolutely fabulous time with the Merthyr Malayali Cultural Association [MMCA] who, you may remember, were voted volunteer group of the year in Merthyr Borough.

The Malayali community rejoiced in the Onam celebrations at Blessed Carlo Acutis Catholic School. The festival originates from the southern Indian state of Kerala. Primarily a harvest festival, Onam also incorporates the celebration of equality, love and happiness. All of the Onam festival facets were acclaimed yesterday in a truly joyous and happy day.

The welcome for myself as High Sheriff was second to none. Together with other guests including the leader of Merthyr CBC Cllr Geraint Thomas, we were treated to a spectacular and colourful display of traditional costume, music, dancing and a delicious banquet which certainly observed a bounteous harvest.

Even the legendary and beloved King Mahabali made an appearance. A wise and just ruler who has brought peace and prosperity to his nation - something I wish for us all.

Congratulations to Cllr. John Thomas and a Happy Onam to one and all! Gembira Onam kepada semua.
