Monday, April, 2nnd, was ‘Earth Day.’ Therefore, it was with great satisfaction I attended the official opening of the Bridgend County Borough Council’s brand new £2.3 million community recycling centre.

Most Bridgend County Borough residents are dedicated recyclers. Thanks to this new facility located on Village Farm Industrial Estate, Pyle, thousands of households are now able to recycle even more of their waste.

The expanded facilities can accommodate up to 24 cars, with an additional on-site queuing capacity for a further 72 vehicles. The recycling centre’s split-level design makes driver access far easier. A one-way system, ramps and bypass lanes allows for better movement on site.

With ‘up-cycling’ on the rise, it was particularly exciting to hear of the plans for a re-use shop. Here household items that are in good condition can be sold to new users.

It was clear from the excitement at the opening, a great deal of community engagement had taken place, particularly within local schools. A poster competition had been held among them. The eager enthusiasm among the children of Afon Y Felin, Mynydd Cynffig and Pil Primary Schools, who took part in waste and recycling workshops with BCBC Education and Enforcement Team in 2023 was a joy to witness.

ADA Recycling will also carry out engagement workshops on site for pupils in local schools.

Hopefully all local residents will take advantage of this fabulous facility, plus the established recycling centres at Maesteg and Brynmenin. All centres take recyclable items from beds to batteries free of charge.

Before making a visit to any of the recycling units, check the BCBC website for the opening times. Opening days and times for the new recycling centre can be found on the BCBC website,

Well done to all involved in the exciting, informative event.
