This evening I was delighted to make a presentation to the Llynfi Valley Historical Society at Maesteg Town Council Offices.

I was able to relate the history of the office of High Sheriff that originated in Saxon times - and became increasingly powerful over the centuries.

I spoke of the powers of raising taxes, local militia and meting out law and order on behalf of the Monarch. The first woman High Sheriff was Dame Nicola de la Haye, castellan of Lincoln castle in 1217, and the first black High Sheriff was appointed in Wales - for Monmouthshire in 1818.

Over the centuries, there were quite a number of eccentric High Sheriffs. I hope I’m not among that number.

I also hope the talk was informative and entertaining. I certainly enjoyed the opportunity to give a run-down of this ancient role.
