Today, the AGM of the Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations took place at the Best Western Premier Heronston Hotel & Spa, Bridgend.

It was mind-boggling to hear of the incredibly busy year our local community organisations and third sector providers have experienced.

Volunteers have been the lifeblood of our communities for centuries. Without them, it is highly likely many services which we enjoy would collapse.

Unlike in times gone by, whereby a good, well-meaning heart could undertake their philanthropic actions: today checks and training make volunteering more difficult and time-consuming. Yet amazingly, selfless volunteers still come forward.

Volunteers give so much of their time and energy for the benefit of others. Volunteering is rewarding and improves the well being of those that volunteer. Our communities increasingly rely on the good will and support of volunteers - I don't know where we would be without them.

Witnessing the work of volunteers first hand during my year as High Sheriff, has been one of the absolute highlights. What I thought I knew proved minimal in comparison to what goes on within our communities.

If you have a little spare time - there are so many ways in which you can contribute. Just one hour a week can make a huge difference to individuals and community groups.

Insightful and supportive speeches were made by: Cllr. Jane Gebbie, Deputy Leader of Bridgend County Borough CouncilChris Buchan Head of Community and Third Sector Policy Welsh Government. Many thanks to BAVO Chief Executive Heidi Bennett and Chair Steve Curry for the invite - an opportunity to speak - and provide further insights into the phenomenal voluntary activity that is being delivered in our community. Diolch yn Fawr iawn.
