The South Wales Police Youth Trust [SWPYT] was set up in 2009. It is a registered charity which provides grants to organisations and projects offering young people aged between the ages of 10-25, an alternative path than that of being drawn into crime, anti-social behaviour, disorderly activity and substance misuse.
The aim of the SWPYT is to give those young people who have had some experience of the criminal justice system, a chance to build the foundations to make more positive life choices, have better relationships and improved mental and physical well-being. Such interventions are proven to work to benefit the individual and more importantly, our communities. It is always a time to rejoice when hearing ‘real-life’ stories of the successful ascent of young people from an existence following crime in their early lives; to living a fulfilling life free of crime, where positive choices are regularly made. The cause is a noble one and prove despite a poor beginning, such projects can metamorphose lives for the better.
Last night it was a pleasure to host a table at the South Wales Police Youth Trust fundraising gala dinner at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea. I was delighted that my South Wales Police cadets Sophie and Billy, plus Cadet leaders PCSO Steve Morgan and Geoff Seymour were able to attend. Four people who really give their all to the cause of promoting positive opportunities among our young people, and provide such great role models for others. Diolch yn fawr iawn my High Sheriff Cadet Team!
It was a fantastic evening, of entertainment. The Rising Stars Choir and soprano, Madlen Forwood, added their names to the long list of assured, accomplished and wonderful entertainers who have graced the historical venue. The joy at performing at the event, exuded by the Rising Stars Choir was infectious. It was also deeply moving for all. Please check them out live or at the very least, on-line. Madlen Forwood was exceptional and such was her expert precision, the clarity of her voice could cut crystal. An entertainer whose name will be even more widely known in the future, I'm sure.
Mal Pope seamlessly compered and entertained in his own unique, modest manner. He even managed to duet with his 14 year-old self. Thank you all so much you were brilliant!
The raffle and auction were skilfully managed by Mrs Jane James, former High Sheriff of Mid-Glamorgan and retired BBC Wales newsreader. The expert manner in which Mrs. James conducted the auction suggests many an hour spent eyeing a bargain at the auction houses of the nation.
Make no mistake, this was a supremely organised event and truly successful. Congratulations to everyone who made this happen, particularly the sponsors, trustees, South Wales Police staff, and in particular my fellow High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, Mrs Melanie James.
The funds raised will make a significant and positive impact for young people in the South Wales Police force area. Someone, somewhere, will be lifted from an ‘existence’ to a life well lived. After all, it’s not where you start – it’s where you finish.
Llongyfarchiadau i chi gyd! What a great night, thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
